Third Singularity

Life, as we know it so far, is a complex system that began to manifest itself very soon after the formation of the Earth. The planet was formed 4.5 billion years ago being, in its most remote beginnings, a scorching igneous ball of thousands of degrees Celsius. In the first 150 to 200 million years the original cooling had already decreased, which allowed, or originated, the beginning of the formation of the primordial terrestrial crust. Around the first 500 to 600 million years of its existence, the most remote and ancestral living systems had already formed, the cyanobacteria, of which we still have fossil evidence, which are known as stromatolites. The evolution of living systems was amazingly maintained in a unicellular way for no less than 3,500 million years. Suddenly and without anyone knowing for sure the reason or why, just between 580 and 540 million years ago, what is known as the Cambrian Explosion took place, a period during which the entire planet was filled with multicellular organisms. It was after this period so close, approached from a geological perspective, that the evolution of multicellular living beings, following among others the neo-Darwinian laws of evolution, increased their level of complexity to unimaginable levels and could give way to the possibility of the emergence of a new species, the homo species, within which the conditions for the appearance on the planet of human beings were given and, when we say this, we inexorably refer to the human mind.

The appearance of what we call – mind – or, more specifically, human mind, is a unique event in the known universe (so far) but, more than that, amazingly, within the millions of millions of species that have inhabited or inhabit the planet, only one, just one, reached the most suitable tool for evolution: the ability to analyze, reason, deduce and understand. An evolutionary tool of such enormous power that it has allowed us, as a species, to dominate and even change the entire planet that serves as our home.

Why is it that a single species out of the millions and millions that have existed was the only one that could achieve this? This is a question to which, once again, science has no answer.

This marvelous, mysterious, amazing and implausible process and its culmination with the emergence of the – human mind – is what we call the THIRD SINGULARITY.
